I can understand the situation must be difficult for you when the Creative SB X-Fi Sound system doesn't work as it should.

Which build version is installed on the PC? Was this reply helpful? Yes No. Those poor folks thought they were just buying an audio card and ended up with the only piece of hardware on the market that requires dual-channel memory. The highest performance quad-SLI setup runs just fine on a single channel motherboard, even with a physics card and a RAID adapter in the mix.

Toss in an X-Fi card, though, and the whole thing goes to hell. That must be one cutting edge piece of hardware to be so finicky about the operating environment. Or it could be that the drivers just blow goats.

Assuming a worst case of 96kHz, bit 7. Remember, the X-FI can only do kHz with stereo audio. Creative is complaining about latencies approaching uS causing buffer underruns. To avoid buffer underruns at these latencies, you would need bytes of buffer. Hell, put 2k of buffer on there. The damn silicon in use on the card supports already supports large external memories; would adding a decent buffer to the bus or in the silicon be all that bad? Why not plan for the worst case? Actually, the same can be said for practically any piece of hardware.

The real question is what kind of quirks are there and if you are willing to deal with them. Interesting, my M-Audio Audiophile is top notch. Shame you ahve had troubles with your Revolution 5. Clearly the problems are not universal.

I would agree that people are way too quick to demonize Creative. They should know more about how their card communicates on the bus than anyone else. And like i said, running just IE and scrolling with mp3s playing in the background makes it pop. Other brand cards work fine without a hitch when things get busy, so Creative is exempt from criticism when this has been an issue with them before? Old school sound blaster cards had these problems.

Thats probably becasue review sites know how to setup a computer properly in a manor that would alieviate most of the issues here. According to the Creative mouthpeice, setting up your computer properly in the first place is a big help. Lets not mix words here, these X-Fi cards are for enthusiests. And as such, you should be able to setup your own computer properly. I dont hold it against review sites that they know how to setup a computer, and dont purposfully run their tests in an environment that is designed to be in an incorrectly installed state.

It seems to cut off the first fraction of a second of WAV playback. Not a show-stopper, but annoying. My MP3 player app of choice Foobar does not get along with the Revo 5. Playback keeps dropping back to what sounds like 22kHz sampling rate or something. Really fiddly to get it to record decently under Audacity for some reason. It never has been. Whenever something shows up that is very latency sensitive, you get probs. It was caused by the Voodoo hogging the bus.

Then I ran into it with Live! The card literally could not produce a single clear sound. This is a combination of chipset bugs and BIOS negligence. With the new card, I got popping and crackling. After reading up on Cardbus, I found that it was very likely the host chip was junk and it was not allotting adequated bus time to the card.
